Why We Don’t Place Your Ads Ourselves (And Why That’s The Point)

Why We Don’t Place Your Ads Ourselves (And Why That’s The Point)

We learned ad placement well enough to collaborate—but chose to stay focused on the brand and web work where daily attention makes us excellent.

Marketing performance data reviewed at a desk

For years, our clients did the same thing after we finished their brand and their website. They took the work we built and handed it to someone else—an ad agency or marketing firm—to actually put it in front of people. We designed the ads. Someone else placed them.

At some point, we asked ourselves why. If we’re already this involved in a client’s brand, why not just handle ad placement too?

So we went and learned it. Real training, not a weekend course. And what we found changed our minds completely.

The deeper we went, the more we understood what we didn’t know

Ad placement, done well, is its own deep discipline. It’s not just picking a budget and boosting a post. It’s strategy, bidding, targeting, constant adjustment based on real numbers, and a genuine fluency in reading performance data and knowing what to change and when.

It’s easy to underestimate how much strategy this actually requires. That gap—between treating it as simple and understanding how deep it really goes—is exactly where a lot of ad spend quietly gets wasted.

As we got deeper into it, we also started vetting potential partners, and that process taught us something worth sharing. There isn’t one right way to do ad placement. There are many approaches, and which one is actually good depends entirely on the client and the goal.

A business that needs constant, aggressive lead generation needs a different approach than a business using ads to support brand awareness alongside other channels. One isn’t better than the other in the abstract. It’s a matter of what role ad placement is actually supposed to play in your overall marketing strategy, and finding a partner whose approach matches that role.

The training was intense. It had to be, because doing this well is a real skill set—one that takes ongoing, daily attention to stay sharp at. Algorithms change. Platforms shift. What worked six months ago isn’t necessarily what works now.

And that’s when the real question came into focus. Not “can we learn this.” We could, and we did, enough to speak the language fluently. The real question was whether learning it was the same thing as being the right people to do it every single day.

Staying excellent at one thing takes daily focus. So does the other.

Here’s what we came to understand. Being at the forefront of brand development, web design, and web strategy takes daily attention. The tools change, the expectations change, and what makes a website feel current changes faster than most people realize. Staying sharp there is a full-time pursuit on its own.

Ad placement, done at a serious strategic level, is the same kind of full-time pursuit. Different skill, same demand for daily focus.

We had a choice. Split our attention across both and risk being good at neither, or stay excellent at what we’ve always done best and find a genuine partner who lives inside ad placement the same way we live inside brand and web.

We chose the second option.

What we didn’t give up

We still went through the training, and that part mattered. We didn’t want to hand this off blind. We wanted to understand the language, the levers, and the strategy behind it well enough to sit in the room with our ad partner and actually collaborate—not just hear a report back after the fact.

That education shapes how we build a brand and a website in the first place. When we know how ad placement actually works, how quality scores affect cost, and how a landing page needs to match what an ad promises, we build websites that are ready for that from day one. We’re not designing in isolation and hoping the ad side figures out how to make it work later.

Who this is actually for

Serious ad placement is a real investment, and it’s not the right move for every business. It makes the most sense for companies that lean heavily on ad placement to bring in new business, where getting in front of the right person at the right moment is core to how they grow.

If that’s you, you need to know your numbers: what you’re spending, what you’re getting back, and how to adjust when something isn’t working. That’s not a “set it and forget it” budget line. It’s an ongoing, strategic relationship with your own data.

Working in tandem, not handing off blind

When a client works with us on brand and web, and with our ad partner on placement, they’re not managing two disconnected vendors who’ve never spoken. We stay in the conversation. We understand the strategy well enough to make sure the visual and brand side gives our partner exactly what they need to do their job well.

They bring a level of daily, dedicated expertise to placement that we were honest enough with ourselves to admit wasn’t where our own daily focus belonged.

We’d rather be excellent at fewer things than average at everything. That’s the whole reason this partnership exists.
